Program Description

The term “Pura-Vida” is used to describe a “simple or “pure” life. However, in Costa Rica this is not just a saying, but a mindset that infiltrates all aspects of life and culture. The country of Costa Rica is not only known for its “pura-vida” lifestyle but its commitment to permaculture which makes it the perfect backdrop to study sustainability practices. In this course, students will learn how Costa Rica has been able to integrate agrarian methods for food production, culture, health, and technology for the promotion of global sustainability and the well-being of communities. Students will use this information to evaluate different cultural, agricultural, and health initiatives with regards to sustainability both at home and abroad.

While in Costa Rica, students will be given the opportunity to experientially evaluate how organizations around the world build sustainable societies. Traveling abroad during Winter Break 2019-2020, faculty and students will visit sites integral to food production and distribution in Costa Rica, including an organic coffee farm, markets, and food cooperatives. Visits to a rainforest, volcano, and hot springs are also planned. Students will also have the opportunity to improve their Spanish skills by meeting with local students. Students will spend part of the time staying with host families and part of the time staying in a lodge.

This course is most appropriate for students interested in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Biology, and Health.

The academic course associated with this program is HLT/SCI/MUS 398 and 399: Sustainability in Costa Rica for 4 total credits. Students will elect to receive HLT, SCI, or MUS credit. It will be taught by Professors Tiffiny Shockley, Yvette Clifton, and Laura Lohman.
