Spain’s political development is fascinating, and so much easier to understand in person. Join us as we explore Spanish history and politics, from political consolidation under Catholic monarchical rule in the 15th century, to a brief period of democracy in the early 1930s, a brutal civil war followed by four decades of dictatorship, and, most recently, the emergence of democracy. Understanding the extractive nature of monarchical institutions is easier when you see sites like El Escorial, built by Phillip II as his own personal monastery at a time when the majority of Spanish people were poor and illiterate. Likewise, exploring Guernica, a Spanish city destroyed during the civil war, will help us to understand this conflict as an ideological, global, and fundamentally wrenching battle over power and ideas. In order to truly understand the implications of Spanish leaders on society, the Civil War will be examined through historical and literary frameworks. Spanish and non-Spanish literature will demonstrate various points of view on the conflict. Understanding historical facts and Civil War literature will enable students to think critically about the evolution of Spain in the 20th century and the impact of war on literature and ideology. This program will awaken your interest for Spanish history and literature. And, living in Madrid for three weeks will give you a very intimate perspective of the city. During the travel component in Madrid, students will have the opportunity to visit sites such as the Royal Palace of Madrid, Plaza Mayor, Palace of the Cortes, Spanish Civil War battlefields, national art museums and Phillip II’s monastery. A weekend trip to Guernica is also planned. This course may be most appropriate for students interested in European and Spanish politics, political science, sociology, international studies and Spanish culture, and language. The academic course associated with this program is LAN/POL 398/399 – Villains & Heroes of Spain’s Civil War for 4 total credits. This course may count as SPA 370 if novels are read in Spanish. It will be taught by Drs. Maggie Commins and Liliana Wendorff. This is an OPEN program.
