Each year during spring break, a group of 15 -16 students and 2 advisors travel to Guatemala for a mission trip. The trip has a threefold focus: to learn more about how God is at work in the world, to be in solidarity with the people of Guatemala, and to challenge each participant to deepen his / her faith. Students prepare for the trip with a 3 credit hour course that focuses on the religious history, the socio-economic conditions, and the history and culture of Guatemala as well as helping the group become a true caring community. During the 10-day trip, the mission team participates in a work project defined by our Guatemala partners, visits social justice groups at work in Guatemala, worships with local church congregations, and learns more about life in Guatemala. The trip is centered on developing an intercultural understanding and on strengthening our faith. This is a SELECTIVE program. Applications are solicited and team members chosen exclusively through the university Chaplain and the Belk Chapel staff.
