This course will draw from a historical perspective of spatial and aural expression, chasing “sweetness and light” following the development of the Aesthetic Movement in Victorian London through Impressionism and L’Art Nouveau in turn-of-the-century Paris, a time of awakening of creativity before modernism. Throughout the course, students will reflect on spatial and musical experiences; read period publications; listen to musical pieces; and complete a term project that reflects their rendition of “Sweetness and Light”. While in London, students will go on guided tours, visiting historical landmarks such as William Morris’ Red House, art museums including the Victoria and Albert Museum, The National Gallery, and enjoy afternoon tea. The second half of the trip will take place in Paris, where visits include Giverny (Claude Monet's Home and Garden), the Louvre Museum and examples of Art Nouveau across the city. Throughout the time in London and Paris, students will also attend musical performances to underscore the role of musical expression in these movements. The experience culminates with dinner along the River Seine in a Bateaux Mouche.* This course is most appropriate for students with creative interests, regardless of major. The academic course associated with this program is IAD/MUS 398 and 399: Chasing Sweetness and Light for 4 total credits. Students will elect to receive IAD or MUS credit.
