Argentina’s descent into a brutal “Dirty War” shocked its citizens and the world. In the post-conflict period, however, individuals, politicians, and human rights organizations have developed internationally recognized approaches to healing societies post-conflict from which much can be learned. During a 7-8 day immersive experience in Buenos Aires over Spring Break, students will meet students, politicians and members of human rights organizations, all intimately involved in pursuing justice and the protections of human rights both for those who suffered during the Dirty War, and for society more generally. While in Argentina, learning will focus not only on post-conflict attempts to heal society, but current challenges to social cohesion by exploring frequently ignored communities, or shanty towns, and gaining the perspective of their residents. There will also be the opportunity to experience a historical walking tour of downtown Buenos Aires to learn about the beginnings of Argentina. Lectures from local university professors will provide students with an expert resident’s perspective. A visit to Casa Rosada, the office of the President of Argentina, as well as a day trip to the Colonia region of Uruguay are also planned.* This course is most appropriate for students interested in Political Science, Human Rights, Sociology, Psychology, and Social Justice. The academic course associated with this program is POL/SPN 398 and 399: Argentina 2020: Exploring social justice and healing in the “Paris of the South” for 4 total credits. Students will elect to receive POL or SPN credit. It will be taught by Professors Liliana Wendorff and Maggie Commins.
