How do individuals, groups, institutions, and organizations influence the physical form that cities shape? How does the physical form of an urban space affect individual and group behavior? Barcelona is a beautiful, vibrant city. Nestled between gentle slopes and the bright-blue Mediterranean Sea, Barcelona has long been a center of trade, attracting peoples from a variety of cultural backgrounds to exchange goods and ideas. The result is an exciting, cosmopolitan city renowned for its art, architecture, history, and food. Come walk the streets of Barcelona and see how a Roman outpost transformed into a medieval city bursting at the seams, which then transformed into a modern city. Admire Gaudi's whimsical modernist structures and world-class museums featuring work by Picasso, Miro, and other masters. Hike the hills above the unique monastery at Montserrat. Barcelona provides a perfect place to contemplate the social, aesthetic, geographic, environmental, economic, political, and cultural forces that shape cities and the people who live in them. Hopeful itinerary highlights: - walk Barcelona's unique, distinct neighborhoods - visit Barcelona's world-class art museums - encounter Gaudi's architectural masterpieces, including the Sagrada Familia - enjoy a day-trip to the Montserrat monastery and the surrounding hiking trails - sample delicacies from Catalonia, Spain, and the world WHY SHOULD A STUDENT JOIN THIS COURSE: Students should join this course to learn more about how cities are built and how they function.
