Credits: Biology Meeting times for Spring 2023 (subject to change): MW 3:50-5:05 PM Faculty leaders: Patricia Koplas and Jeff Thomas OPEN PROGRAM *all itinerary items are subject to change* This course explores a variety of ecosystems and the interdependence of human communities and their surrounding ecosystems. How do we balance human development and "progress" with environmental sustainability? Have you ever wanted to hike on a volcano or take a night hike through the jungle? In this course and study tour you will discuss the difficulty of enacting conservation efforts along with the needs of multiple competing stakeholders (indigenous communities, corporations, government, etc). You will learn about how scientific data are collected and used to inform these conservation efforts. During the international experience you will explore the most diverse ecosystem on the planet in the rain forests of Ecuador. One of the main goals of this experience is to collect data that is relevant to local communities as they make decisions about their environment. Hopeful Itinerary Highlights: - Touring Quito, visiting culturally important sites and also visiting the equator! - Visit Otavalo Indian Market with a variety of local crafts for purchase - Hike volcano overlooking Quito - Spend a few days in the rain forest hiking and collecting field data WHY SHOULD A STUDENT JOIN THIS COURSE?
