Program Description

The Women’s World Cup continues to be one of the biggest sporting events in the world. At the 2015 Women’s World Cup, there were over 1 million people in total attendance and FOX recorded its largest audience for a football match with over 8 million viewers. In 2019, the stage is set for the Women’s World Cup in France and the world is watching. Through this course, students will examine the role that gender plays in the American sport industry versus the role of gender in French and international sport. In Summer, 2019 students will travel to Paris and Lyon France during the 2019 Women’s World Cup.

Students will have the opportunity to volunteer with a UNICEF project in Lyon that works to promote equity in sports. Depending on FIFA regulations and background check requirements, students may also be able to volunteer with the World Cup. Visits to local historical and athletic sites, universities, and meetings with corporate sponsors are also planned. Students will gain insight into the impact of a global megaevent on local residents. And conversely, how the local residents shape this event for an international audience. At the conclusion of the experience, students will complete a case study that will incorporate analyses of organizational structures, governance, market research, sponsorship and economic impact through a global lens. *

This course is most appropriate for students interested in Kinesiology, Sport Management, Business, Women and Gender Studies, and French Culture.

The academic course associated with this program is KIN 398 and 399: Women’s Sport in the Global Marketplace for 4 total credits. It will be taught by Drs. James Allen and Robert Lyons.

This is a Selective program.
The travel component of this course will run for approximately 10 days end of June - beginning of July
