Program Description

The Arts in Florence program is designed to expose students to the cultural heritage of Florence. Students will learn about the art, music and theatre of Florence from ancient times to the present. In the classroom, students will learn to identify artistic, musical and theatrical styles and masters of Florentine history, and to be familiar with important historical periods in Italian history. Abroad, students will have the opportunity to experience the archives of Florence and more deeply study the arts under Queens Art History and Music faculty.

While in Florence, students will attend classes as well as participate in faculty-led excursions around the city. Such activities include visits to museums, religious places of worship, Duomos, and other prominent historical sites. An excursion to Milan to see the World’s Fair is also planned. Students will also have the opportunity to take classes at the Florence Academy of Art or Florence Academy of Music.

Birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and capital of the Tuscan region of Italy, Florence is known for its ancient history and rich culture. Florence is also the home of countless famous sculptures, paintings, churches, and their creators. The arts, music, cuisine, theatre and deeply rooted history of Florence set it apart from other Italian cities, making it the perfect location for this course.

This course is most appropriate for students interested in art history, music history, music therapy, theater, new media design, interior design, studio art, arts leadership, creative writing and literature. Students do not need to be advanced artists but must be willing to practice art techniques.

The academic course associated with this program is ART 401 Seminar in Art History: The Arts of Florence/MUSC 355: Seminar in Music History, for 4 credits.

This course meets throughout the Spring semester and travels in May. Exact travel dates are TBD.

Itinerary and planned activities subject to change.
