London: host city of the oldest tournament in tennis; only city to host the Olympic Games three times; birthplace of football and cricket. London is an ideal location for studying the impact of global mega sports properties on an advanced western city. This unique program consists of two courses, of which students will apply for one: BUS 398 or COM 398. The BUS course will explore the functional knowledge for assessing the impact of sporting events and sports teams on local stakeholders, while COM 398 covers the role of media in these events, preparing students to create their own stories using video, still photography, and online platforms. In London, the BUS and COM courses will participate in some activities together, and some separately. While the BUS course is conducting field research on the economic impact of Wimbledon on London, the COM course will produce media packages highlighting the impact of the tournament on the community. Both courses will visit cultural sites around the city. All travelers will leave the city with a deep understanding of how Wimbledon affects the London culture. This course is most appropriate for students interested in business, communication, sports management, journalism or digital storytelling. The academic courses associated with this program are COM 398/399 and BUS 398/399: Queens in Wimbledon, for 4 total credits per course. COM/BUS 398 is worth 2 credits, and COM/BUS 399 is worth 2 credits. Students will choose one course – COM or BUS. COM 398/399 will be taught by Professor Joe Cornelius; BUS 398/399 will be taught by Dr. Beth Schneider, and Professor Bob Page will teach material in both courses. This is a SELECTIVE program. *Itinerary and planned activities subject to change.*
