The old city center still has its ancient stone buildings, stone-paved roads and horse-drawn carriages. Next to Paris, it is the largest French-speaking city in the world with a population of 2.8 million. Some say it is a little piece of Europe in North America. Located on an island in the St. Lawrence River, Montreal is a city where you can experience live theatre and concerts in both languages. Treat yourself to cuisine from all over the world at a variety of excellent restaurants. Visit the beautiful countryside around Montreal. Watch the leaves turn color in the autumn or the city come alive in the summer. If you like outdoor activities, Montreal has everything from hiking and sailing in the warmer months to skiing and skating in the colder months. If you like shopping, go no further. Montreal is the fashion capital of Canada. Discover the “underground city” – you can shop in more than 11,700 boutiques and major department stores; or relax in popular restaurants and cafes; or end your evenings at the theatre or cinema-all without ever stepping outdoors. With Montreal’s convenient Metro system, everything is within your reach. Be sure to climb Mount Royal for a beautiful view of the city. Perhaps you would prefer to wander the cobblestone streets of the Old Port. Soak in the history and walk along the waterfront to see street performers and artists demonstrating their talents. Participate in some of the world-class events taking place in Montreal: the annual internationally acclaimed Jazz festival, the Just for Laughs comedy festival, or the Formula One auto race in June.
