Program Description

During this program, we will investigate religious practices in two major metropolitan cities – Beijing and Chengdu. In the classroom, students learn the history, main tenets, practices, and traditions of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. Christianity in China will also be discussed as it pertains to the relationship between missionaries and the Chinese people.

Abroad, we will visit three sites of pilgrimage for Taoists, Buddhists, and Tibetan Buddhists. These sites provide insight in the nature of the religious traditions studied in the classroom, and students would see how modern Chinese practice those religions on the ground. Visiting these places will reveal how capitalism and communism have affected these religious traditions, since all religious sites must be approved by the government. This program will encourage students to see that learning about religious traditions in the classroom is only part of a much bigger and more complicated picture.

The People’s Republic of China is the world’s second largest country by land area, and the largest by population. Its history and culture are deeply rooted, as China’s civilization dates back to ancient times. Today, China still celebrates its ancient traditions, while transitioning into modernity. It now has one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

This course is most appropriate for students interested in Philosophy and Religion, and/or Chinese culture. Students should be aware of the rigorous physical components of this trip, as there will be a lot of walking and hiking of China’s most sacred peaks and taking various modes of transportation (bus, train, cable car). Students need to be flexible, adaptable, and comfortable with staying in some very basic accommodations including some overnight trains.

The academic course associated with this program is PHIL/REL 291: Investigating Religion in China, for 4 credits.

This course meets throughout the Spring semester and travels in May. Exact travel dates are TBD.

Itinerary and planned activities subject to change.
