La bella figura in its simplistic form means “the beautiful one” or “fine impression.” However, for Italians the term is intrinsic to the culture. It speaks to a way of life, a pride in one’s self and one’s family. In this course, students will explore gender construction in Italy by focusing on historical and modern ideas of femininity and masculinity. This international study experience allows students to question the cultural term of “la bella figura” and its influence historically and regionally on Italian beliefs about gender and family. While in Italy, students will examine the influential nature of gender norms on the family system in three contrasting regions, the traditional Sicily and Calabria, and the urban-wealthy Emilia Romagna. A visit to Florence is also planned. Museum visits, walking tours, observations of gender in public spaces, and guest lecturers at local universities will allow students to explore the cultural experiences of Italian women and men and highlight the impact on familial relationships. Students will also be exposed to advocacy efforts and wellness programs aiding these changing family systems. * This course is most appropriate for students interested in Human Service Studies, Women and Gender Studies, Sociology, and Psychology. The academic courses associated with this program are HSS/SOC/LNG 398 and 399: Gender and Family in Italy: Beyond La Bella Figura! for a total of 4 credits. Students will elect to receive either HSS, SOC, or LNG credit. It will be taught by Drs. Lucia Galleno and Saundra Penn This is an OPEN Program. The travel component of this course will run for approximately 10-11 days in May. *all itinerary items are tentative and subject to change
