This program will explore comparisons between Human Service agencies and practices in the United States and the United Kingdom. Through site visits to non-government organizations (NGOs), non-profit and religious organizations in London, students will experience the effects of public policy on the Human Services available in the UK. Throughout the spring semester, coursework focused on the history of Human Services and current vulnerable populations in the US and the UK is paired with fieldtrips to local non-profit agencies that offer human and social services to the Charlotte area. In London, the faculty and students will continue learning about the services offered in the UK through visits to NGOs, faith-based organizations, and non-profits. The nationalized health care system in England differs greatly from the US’s privatized system, and so London will provide an interesting and drastic comparison. This course may be most appropriate for students interested in human services, sociology, comparative political studies or international studies. The academic course associated with this program is HSS 352 Special Topics in Human Services/Comparative Study of US and UK Human Services Programs, for 4 credits. This course meets throughout the Spring semester and travels in May. Exact travel dates are TBD. Itinerary and planned activities subject to change. ***The application process for this program is currently CLOSED***
